AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting: 22-26 February 2010, Portland, Oregon

There are multiple sessions at the AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting of interest to GCOOS. Some are listed below. See the AGU website for more information.

Session IT36:  “Use of oceanographic data in ecosystem based management decision making”.
Submit your abstracts through: http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/program/abstract_submissions.php as the deadline is 15 October 2009. We are anticipating having a Town Hall meeting on this subject as well. Details will be made when available.

Abstract of Session
Historically and increasingly real-time environmental data are critical parts of decision support systems for ecosystem-based management. This session seeks submissions from researchers that use in-situ and/or remotely sensed data (satellite, airborne, gliders, other), as well as modeling efforts as part of ongoing decision support systems. Relevant topics range from water management issues to inland, coastal and oceanic pelagic systems (including microscopic to large predators - other pelagics) to coral reef ecosystems.

International Conference on Sea Level Rise in the Gulf of Mexico: Impacts, Adaptations, and Management: 1-3 March 2010, Corpus Christi, TX

Sea level is rising along the Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. Historical tide gauge measurements prove this and model projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change project that global sea-level rise will continue at an increasing rate during the next 100 years. Even if we simply project the current rates of sea-level rise 50-100 years into the future, we see that the impact to humans and the environment will be significant because coastal populations and infrastructure have moved closer to the coast during the last 50 years. The amount of sea-level rise and the impact it has had and will continue to have will vary around the Gulf according to geologic setting and human activities. This international conference will examine the phenomenon of sea-level rise in the Gulf and consider how people and the natural environment can or will respond.

The overall goal of the conference is to share knowledge among researchers studying the natural processes and human dimensions of sea-level rise in the Gulf of Mexico and to engage decision makers and the public in planning for the future. The conference is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Provide a forum for presentation of the latest research on sea-level rise including the physical, biological and human dimensions aspects of the phenomenon.
  2. Renew, continue and start new collaborations among researchers.
  3. Inform government, industry and the public on the nature, causes, and impacts of sea-level rise.
  4. Inform researchers and the public of the issues facing industry and government regarding sea-level rise.
  5. Examine, compare, and consider new policy and regulatory frameworks impacting how society copes with sea-level rise.
  6. Provide outreach products such as recorded presentations, graphics, and summaries to inform the public and educators and to support curriculum development.

Registration begins 15 August 2009. For more information, http://www.SeaLevelRise2010.org. A pdf flyer is available.

Call for Abstracts: Deadline 25 January 2010

The International Conference on Sea-Level Rise in the Gulf of Mexico: Impacts, Adaptations, and Management is accepting abstracts to be presented as posters during the conference to be held 1-3 March 2010 in Corpus Christi, Texas. This is an open call for poster presentations which will be on display for the entire conference. Further details are available.
