The Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA) has created the Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award and is now accepting donations. Vembu, who died in a car accident on Jan. 24, was Deputy Director RCOOS and DMAC Operations for SECOORA and often worked closely with GCOOS’s  own data management and outreach and education teams. The scholars award will honor his commitment to teaching students about oceans. SECOORA’s goal is to raise $50,000 to establish an annual scholarship of approximately $2,500 in perpetuity in Vembu’s honor.

Checks can be made out to GCOOS and sent to the GCOOS treasurer:  Jan van Smirren, BMT Group Ltd, 11505 W. Little York Road, Houston, Texas, 77041, United States . Online donations can be made on SECOORA’s website.
